The Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) is located in Seawell, Christ Church. The airport was known as Seawell Airport before being dedicated in honor of the first Premier of Barbados, Sir Grantley Herbert Adams in 1976.
The airport handles most large aircraft including Boeing 747s. The airport was also one of the few destinations in the world where British Airways' Concorde aircraft made regularly-scheduled flights, before the Concordes were completely retired. Concorde typically flew to Barbados during the busy UK-Barbados winter season. Concorde flight times from the United Kingdom to Barbados were less than 4 hours.
The Grantley Adams International Airport was formed by the Government of Barbados, following the advice of British Aerospace Consultants that a commercially run airport authority was the most appropriate method of managing the airport. The “GAIA Transfer of Management and Vesting of Assets Act 2003” will transfer all rights and responsibilities for the running of the commercial operations of the airport to the company. Air Traffic Control Services will remain with the Ministry of International Transport as will the Department of Civil Aviation which will maintain its regulatory role which will be strengthened by the new Civil Aviation Act.
This airport has direct service to destinations in the United States, Canada, Central America, South America, Africa, and Europe and operates as a major gateway to the Eastern Caribbean. The airport is a second hub for both Caribbean Airlines and Leeward Islands Air Transport (LIAT).
